“Even though third parties rarely win elections, they advance important ideas that are ignored by the two parties.” Maybe, but more fundamentally, I think they serve the role of bringing people back into the same game that will always be against them: Capitalist Electoral Politics. Third parties are like a pressure release valve for the discontent of the people that might otherwise boil over into righteous rebellion against the system. What do you think of that analysis?

That might be a fair description of the Dem Party, but if “third” parties and independent campaigns filled that “release valve” role, the monoparty wouldn’t be trying so hard to suppress them.

If you don’t give them any votes to count, you have no right to complain that they’re not being counted. Likewise, if you don’t try to build an alternative, you have no right to complain that they suppress it with a terrible set of election laws.

I don’t understand why Rocky Anderson thought it made sense to start a new party rather than seek the Green Party’s nomination.
